Brothers and sisters,
It is one of the most difficult questions any of us will ever ask: If God is loving and powerful, why do bad things happen to good people?
When we face pain, loss, or confusion, it is natural to wonder where God is. We often feel like we are walking through a storm alone, and the silence can feel overwhelming. While there is no simple answer that erases the pain, we can find comfort by shifting our perspective on trusting God even when life doesn’t make sense.
Why Does Suffering Exist?
We live in a world that is not yet what it was created to be. Because of the brokenness of the world, we experience the consequences of sin, illness, and human choice. God did not create suffering, but He allows us to live in a world where our choices—and the choices of others—have real-world impact.
However, the most important truth is not why the bad things happen, but who is with us while they are happening. God does not stand at a distance; He is the “Man of Sorrows” who understands our pain intimately. He does not waste our tears; He gathers them.
Finding Purpose in Pain
When we look for purpose in pain, we aren’t saying the bad thing was “good.” Instead, we are acknowledging that God is a master at taking the broken pieces of our lives and creating something new. He uses our hardest seasons to refine our character, deepen our compassion for others, and draw us closer to Him than we ever would have been during times of ease.
A Promise for Your Heart
When you feel like the world is crashing down, remember these words from Jesus. He was honest about the fact that life would be hard, but He promised that He would be the source of our strength.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” — John 16:33 (NIV)
How to Hold on Today
If you are struggling to understand your circumstances, try these three steps to keep your spirit hopeful:
1. Be Honest with God: You don’t have to hide your hurt. Tell Him exactly how you feel. He is big enough to handle your questions, your anger, and your tears.
2. Lean on His Presence: You are not alone. God is closer than your next breath. Ask Him to help you feel His comfort today.
3. Focus on the “Big Picture“: This life is not the end of the story. Because of Jesus, we have the promise of a future where there will be no more pain, no more tears, and no more questions.
Christian devotionals remind us that our current struggle is not our final destination. Keep holding onto the hand of the One who loves you more than you can imagine. Even in the dark, He is working, He is present, and He is holding you close.
