Bible verse (NIV):
“Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.” — Romans 5:3-4
Brothers and sisters,
Let’s take a moment to be honest with each other. When was the last time you faced a truly difficult season? Maybe it’s happening right now. You might be carrying a heavy burden, waiting for an answer, or wondering why God allowed something painful into your life. I know that feeling. We all do.
But here’s the good news: our struggles are never wasted. The apostle Paul writes in Romans 5 that we can actually rejoice in our hardships — not because they feel good, but because God uses them to shape us into stronger, more hopeful people. Let’s walk through that truth together.
Hope in the Hard Times
Let’s be honest — nobody enjoys going through hard times. When trouble comes, our first thought is usually, “Lord, please make this stop!” But Romans 5:3-4 shows us something surprising: God can use our struggles to grow patience, character, and hope.
Tribulation is just a Bible word for trouble or difficult circumstances. None of us want it, but Paul says we can actually “glory” in it. That doesn’t mean we pretend to enjoy pain. It means we trust that God is doing something good behind the scenes.
Reflection Question: What is one trial you are facing right now that you can invite God into, trusting that He is at work?
How Trouble Grows Patience
When life is smooth, patience is easy. But when we’re waiting, hurting, or confused, we learn to depend on God. That waiting helps to build patience. And patience isn’t just sitting around — it’s learning to trust God while we wait.
Think of it like a muscle. You don’t build muscle by lifting nothing. You build it by pushing against resistance. In the same way, our patience grows when we press into God during tough times instead of running away.
Reflection Question: In what area of your life do you need to trade frustration for patient trust in God’s timing?
Patience Leads to Experience
As we walk through trials with God, we start to see His faithfulness. We remember how He helped us before. That’s the “experience” Paul talks about. Every time God comes through, we learn a little more about who He is.
Maybe you can look back at a past struggle and see how God provided, guided, or comforted you. That memory becomes a treasure. It’s proof that God is real and that He cares for you personally.
Reflection Question: Can you recall a time when God showed up in a difficult situation? How does that memory encourage you today?
Experience Leads to Hope
And that’s where hope is born. Not a wishy-washy “maybe things will get better,” but a strong confidence that God is with us and will keep His promises. When we look back and see how God has carried us, we can look forward with hope.
This hope isn’t just for the big things — it’s for every day. It’s the quiet assurance that even if today is hard, God is already working on tomorrow. That kind of hope changes how we live.
Prayer
Father, I admit I don’t love hard times. But I trust that You are working in them. Teach me patience, build my character, and renew my hope as I lean on You. Thank You for never leaving me alone. In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
If you’re looking for hope in trials, remember: Romans 5:3-4 shows us that patience in tribulation is never wasted. God is using it to shape you — and your best days are still ahead.
Final Reflection Question: What is one step you can take this week to embrace a current challenge as an opportunity to grow closer to God?
