Is God Your Hobby or Your Foundation?

Dear Friends,

Let’s be honest with one another today. We often come into this space seeking comfort, but sometimes we need a challenge that shifts the very ground we stand on. We frequently talk about “making time for God,” but have we truly considered what that phrase implies about our priorities? When we say we are “finding time” for the Creator of the universe, we are inadvertently placing Him at the mercy of our own agendas.

Let’s take a moment to sit with that reality as we look at the rhythm of our lives.

We live in a world that applauds the “busy.” Our calendars are packed with meetings, social commitments, and endless to-do lists. In the middle of this rush, it is easy to tuck away our faith into a single hour on a Sunday morning. We treat God like a hobby—something we pick up when we have a little extra time, a spiritual “add-on” to an already crowded schedule.

But if God is only one hour of your weekend, He is not your Lord.

There is a profound difference between having God in your life and having a life built on God. When he is just a hobby, He remains on the periphery. When He is your foundation, He becomes the driving force behind every decision, every conversation, and every priority.

My challenge for you this year is to shift your perspective. Stop trying to squeeze God into your life and start building your life around Him. To be a “God-first” person means that before you check your email, plan your week, or chase your ambitions, you anchor yourself in Him.

If your life were a house, would the foundation be made of solid rock, or is it currently built on the shifting sand of your own busy schedule?

This isn’t about adding more tasks to your plate; it is about changing the source of your strength. When we stop viewing faith as a weekend obligation and start treating it as the bedrock of our existence, we find a peace that the world cannot provide.

Jesus gives us the blueprint for this transformation in Matthew 6:33:

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” (NIV)

This is a promise of divine order. When we place God at the center, everything else begins to fall into place. We stop striving for balance and start living in alignment. As you move forward, let Him be the foundation upon which you build your home, your career, and your relationships. Let Him be the One who drives your week, not just the One you visit on your day off.

Walk in the humility of knowing you cannot do this on your own, but carry the authority that comes from being rooted in the Creator of the universe. Make this the year you stop just “doing church” and start living as a true disciple.
